An amount a provider removes from a patient's balance because it won't be collected - either contractually agreed or deemed uncollectible.
Contractual write-offs are the expected difference between billed charges and the contracted rate. Non-contractual write-offs (like bad debt) represent lost revenue and should be minimized.
High avoidable write-offs signal RCM problems upstream.
