837 (Electronic Claim)
The standard electronic format used to submit healthcare claims to payers.
The 837 is how claims travel from your billing system through a clearinghouse to payers (837P for professional, 837I for institutional). A well-formed, scrubbed 837 is what makes a clean claim.
Its counterpart on the payment side is the 835/ERA.
